Let's Talk
Imagine the roar of the crowd as you step out on stage, guitar in hand. Thousands of people are screaming your name and you can feel your heart pounding in your chest. The energy in the stadium is palpable as you step in front of your mic and take a deep breath.  You are a rockstar and you’re about to blow their minds! Now let’s back up a few steps. What made you get on stage in the first place? Talent, absolutely. The right manager and PR company, sure. But more importantly, you had dopamine, a neurotransmitter, coursing through your body.  Dopamine is responsible for motivating us to take action toward our goals. And, it’s not just for rockstars. As a leader, you are responsible for motivating a team of people to reach a future goal. This can be difficult at times. Especially, when there are so many distractions in the present. Consider the rockstar once more. They are surrounded by distractions, i.e.: opportunities to party, yet the successful musicians who make it big, found their way out to the garage or the studio every single day to practice. We call the “Deep Work” or a state of flow. But that’s a different blog. How do you support your rockstar team to keep their eyes on the future when there are so many distractions in the present? You need to increase their dopamine production… easy, right? But make sure it’s the right kind of dopamine. We live in a world of artificial or fake dopamine to which social media is the largest contributor. And it’s not healthy for you or your band. Don’t worry if you’re not a neuroscientist. There are 3 easy ways to help increase your employees’ dopamine on a daily basis.
  1. Encourage them to set goals for the next day, before they pack it up at night. When they are clear on their purpose for the day, they’ll wake up energized because they will know exactly what to do. Thomas Edison said never go to sleep without asking something of your subconscious. Let your brain work on solutions while you sleep.
  2. Prioritize responsibilities. Jim Collins, author of Good to Great, says, “If you have more than three priorities, you have none.” Avoid causing decision fatigue by clearly communicating that what needs to be done every day is whatever will have the most impact on your immediate or long-term goals or vision.
  3. Offer positive reinforcement when they work towards long-term goals. Sure, it’s wonderful if they accomplish something great in the present moment, but don’t reserve rewards for these occasions. Show them appreciation for sticking with it and working hard every day. Now don’t get me wrong. The science shows that the brain loves celebration. As a band leader, you want to celebrate often. You celebrate the small wins and celebrate and reward the large wins.
As Joan Jett said, “I think my lot in life is to battle. I don’t mean it like you’re always tense and fighting. It’s a long battle, something you don’t win with muscular strength. You win it with mental fortitude, with being able to do what you say you can do.” Hey, there’s no better way to create dopamine the with music and drumming.
